Tell us about yourself!

My name is Kate Brien Kitz, I was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. I’m a wife, mother, and fashion stylist.

When and how did you become interested in styling?

I’ve been interested in fashion for as long as I can remember but it wasn’t until I went to college that I became interested in styling. I studied Visual Culture & the Psyche at NYU, a concentration that I created, delving into how the unconscious speaks through the image. This started with studying photographs, film and art and eventually lead to me to look at the clothing in these mediums and what we can infer about someone from the way that they dress. I became fascinated with clothing as a means of expression and as a tool in creating a persona or character. Which, naturally, lead to styling.

What or who are your personal style influences?

I wouldn’t say I’m personally influenced by a specific person or thing but I am inspired by people who have honed a sense of personal style. They inspire me to trust my own instincts when getting dressed.

In your opinion, what’s the most important element in styling a home?

Comfort. Always.

What advice would you give to someone looking to renovate a space and make it their own?

Stay true to yourself and don’t be swayed by trends — and collect a lot of imagery! I found that the best way to figure out what we really wanted was to compile images of the rooms and homes we were drawn to and see what mood they evoked and how we could create that in our own space.

What are your personal sustainability practices?

When it comes to fashion, I try to shop vintage as much as possible and invest in pieces that I will have for a long time, often reworking garments at the tailor to get more use out of them. And the same goes for my home. Most of our furniture and home goods are vintage or come from small, often local makers. When pieces no longer serve us, I find new homes for them to be loved once again.

How do you Honor Mother Earth?

By spending time with her, expressing my gratitude for her every day and teaching my children to do the same.
