The regenerative cotton harvest is in full swing. The yellow cotton flowers pollinate and giveaway to the cotton seed, covered in fine, white fiber. The mature cotton looks like a large drop of water dripping from the plant when it is ready to be harvested. This season, the plants are heavy with the season’s fruit: superfine, soft, white cotton.
Mother Earth created cotton fiber to help the cotton seeds spread and successfully grow into new cotton plants. The fiber protects the seeds from the elements and acts as a sail to disperse the seeds far and wide. Once they are in new soil, they decompose to create the perfect environment for cotton. Cotton fiber is the caretaker of the seed and I love that the dresses made with this cotton hold the same benefits for us: protection, nourishment, and abundance.
The symbiotic relationship between the cotton seed and fiber is one of many in the Farm-to-Closet ecosystem. Our dresses are a result of layers of mutual-beneficial relationships between plants, soil, people, fabric, dyes, and dresses. We often say reciprocity stitched into every seam for our Farm-to-Closet dresses and it’s true! At every step of the process, from the soil up, we focus on creating reciprocity.
The great thing about reciprocity is that we all benefit! This season is looking to be one of our best yet. The farm grew more cover crops and increased biodiversity, more farmers earned a living wage, more carbon was sequestered from the atmosphere, and the plants produced an abundance of cotton for future Christy Dawn dresses.
“Reciprocity is stitched into every
seam of our Farm-to-Closet dresses.”
Thank you for being a part of the solution, one where everyone can benefit. I am so grateful to be surrounded by a community that cares about Mother Earth, each other, and our future. Together we have created abundance for all!
