Foraging for pine in the depths of winter is one of my favorite activities.

Forest bathing in evergreens, especially pine, is always a shot of hope in the long, dark winter months. Pine’s vibrant, enduring energy speaks to me. The wind carries the uplifting message “trust yourself,” as I search for pine needles fortified with vitamin a + c and antioxidants. The fresh needles become more tender and light in color when steamed. white pine is wonderful for digestion and a mild expectorant.

When foraging for pine, it is best to use a resource to ID your plant. Pine is closely related to cedar, juniper and firs. But it is the only one with clusters of needles two to five are wrapped in a paper like sheath at its base.

I connect with the plant I want to work with before I harvest, giving thanks, my respect, honor, prayers and ask for permission from the plant. I try to not harvest more than I need.

  • 4 slices of fresh ginger
