A Mediterranean Oasis in Palm Springs

My favorite thing about living in Southern California is the diversity of landscapes that surround us. Just a few hours in the car and you can be immersed in the dramatic coastline of Big Sur, the pine-covered mountains of Idyllwild, or the sweeping expanse of desert that is Palm Springs. It is within that desert, tucked into the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest, where the Korakia Pensione sits. This peaceful hideaway consists of two villas, one created in the Moroccan style, one in the Mediterranean. It was to Korakia that we headed for a few nights away from the city—just James, Ally and me—to shoot a few pieces for the start of summer and immerse ourselves in this restful retreat.

We stayed in the Mediterranean Villa, originally owned by J. Carol Naish, a prolific actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Just walking into the bright, sunny rooms felt inspiring and relaxing. The Paxos Suite where we stayed featured clean, whitewashed walls, high wood beam ceilings, and a shady patio perfect for an afternoon nap.

These two historic villas were lovingly restored in 1989 and renamed Korakia, the Greek word for “crow.” They now consist of several bungalows, guesthouses, gardens, and beautiful pools. There is even a citrus grove and olive trees surrounding the property, and gorgeous bougainvillea creeping everywhere.

It was such an inspirational place to shoot some of our early summer pieces. From the moment we walked through the keyhole-shaped Moroccan entry and took a deep breath of the citrus-tinged air, I knew we were somewhere special. Korakia is a place where all the small touches of design matter, which is exactly how I feel about the clothes we create at Christy Dawn—the beauty lies in those little details.

Korakia has become one of my favorite getaways, and I truly cherish the time I get to spend there, whether it was taking afternoon dips in the crystal-clear pools, or cozying up by one of the outdoor fires at night. I love how close to home it is, and how, the moment you enter its doors, you’re transported to a distant land filled with magic and beauty.
